There is certainly an element of that in the fic. Kris is a product of the society he was raised in and so he has never taken issue with the idea of being a companion, or the idea of training or any of that.
Where as Adam, he wasn't nearly so bound by the rules of society thanks in part to his families wealth so he never even had to consider the idea that things like companions were possible. He became aware of them of course, but they were something outside his realm of experience.
So we see the two different view points on the idea that pulls them together in this society. So some the Temple and the Clerics are just there to help them, to govern and guide as it were - and to others there is that aspect of creepy cult to them. And I'd love at some point in the future to take time and explore more of that dynamic from both view points because the world is so much more vast than what I was able to include here.
That being said, thank you for this comment, it definitely makes me want to set aside the time to expand this sooner rather than later.
