Draco sighed; that bloody woman was at it again. He had locked himself up in his study, wincing at the sounds of clanging pots and shattering china. Pansy was insistent on making dinner the Muggle way; Draco shook his head. That woman had never so much as gotten a glass of water the Muggle way and now she was trying to make an entire bloody meal their way. He was sat in the study lazily scanning spell books for a way to make the food disappear from his plate when the time came to actually consume the rubbish Pansy had been able to concoct.
They had only been married for a few months. His father and mother had both pushed for it. Pansy was a pureblood and a Slytherin; what was there to question? The match was perfect as far as his parents were concerned. But as far as Draco was concerned, they could shove their stupid match. He hadn’t wanted to go out with Pansy in the first place much less marry her, but his father could be extremely persuasive at times.
“Bloody hell, woman!” Draco yelled to the door as he heard another loud clattering of pots and smelled smoke. Resignedly, he got up and went to the kitchen, only to find a frazzled Pansy frantically running around the kitchen, a fire on the stove, and smoke rising from the oven.
“This is why we have house-elves, dear,” he said through gritted teeth. With a wave of his wand, the disaster their kitchen had turned into was clean. Pansy collapsed in the middle of the kitchen and began wailing.
“I’m sorry, Draco; I just wanted to make a nice meal for you!” Tears ran freely down her reddened cheeks as sobs wracked her slender frame.
Draco rolled his eyes, walked over to where Pansy sat on the floor, and knelt beside her. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders and ran his hand over her smooth hair. She began to calm and her sobs faded into hiccups. Draco continued to hold her; if he was going to have to live with her for the rest of his life, he would have to try and make the best of it.
:::
They had only been married a few months; she knew Draco hadn’t really wanted to marry her. She could see it in his eyes. Even as he proposed under the watchful eyes of his father, she had been too thrilled not to accept – she had loved him since the first time she laid eyes on him. Pansy had hoped that he could grow to love her as well.
She thought maybe if she did something nice for him it might help things. She hated simply laying beside him at night; aching to reach out and touch him, to show him that way how much she loved him. But he always turned away from her advances, sleeping with his back to her. And when he did take her it was always hard, rough, and without emotion. It was like he was punishing her. It was torture to live with the person she loved most and know that his heart belonged to another. It felt like a punishment, not tenderness. It was torturous living with the person she loved most and knowing that his heart belonged to another.
She had wanted to impress him, to prepare a nice meal they could share. But that idea went up in smoke and tears. As he stroked her hair, she rocked in his arms grateful for even this small amount of compassion from him. She sighed as she caught her breath; she would just have to make the best of it.
:::
He didn’t know when he had fallen in love with her. It was silly really, he knew she’d never love him back; her eyes had long been on the same man he had considered an enemy since childhood. He couldn’t help that she was beautiful, or that the sound of her laughter made his heart sing, or that his heart broke each time she looked right past him.
Harry saw her every day; they worked in the same department. He would often catch himself staring at Pansy, daydreaming of what his life could be like if she loved him and not Draco. He often wondered what it would be like to live with her, to have her as his wife.
It was true that he’d never be able to give her the kind of life that Draco could afford, but would have done his best to give her everything she wanted. He would be her slave if she would just love him.
“What are you looking at, Potter?” Pansy had just noticed him staring at her again; it was the fourth time that day. Harry noticed for the one hundredth time that day how beautiful she really was, even when she was looking at him with disgust.
“Oh nothing, Pansy,” Harry sighed and returned to the paperwork that littered his desk, occasionally looking up over his glasses to catch a glimpse of the woman he loved. If he had to work with her every day, at least he would try and make the best of it.
:::
He never would be able to tell him how he really felt. They had been enemies for so long that he wouldn’t understand – no one would. Draco stood right outside the door of his wife’s office; he often visited her at work simply to catch a glimpse of him.
He watched Harry making eyes at his wife; he should have been upset, he should have been furious. But instead his heart broke. What he would have given to have Harry look at him the same way he looked at Pansy.
Sometimes at night he wondered what it would be like to be with Harry. Would Harry be rough and demanding like he himself was, or would he be gentle and loving? Draco saw the laughter in Harry’s emerald eyes and wished it was something he had caused.
Eventually he walked into the office glaring at Harry and giving a slight smile to Pansy, at least he still got to see Potter, even if it was under the pretenses of visiting Pansy. He would make the best of it.
:::
“Oh, Draco; I didn’t know you were going to be stopping by today.” Pansy’s face lit up seeing her husband strut into the office.
“Hello, Love; I wanted to stop by and check on you.” Draco let his eyes wander over Harry as he spoke.
Harry had returned his attention to his paper work, trying not to let his annoyance show.
“Would you like to go out to dinner tonight, dear? I thought after what happened last night you might enjoy a night away from home.” It was hard for Draco to talk to Pansy this way. All he wanted to do was sweep all those papers off Harry’s desk and pull him on top of it. He hated pretending.
“Yes, of course I would!” Pansy was ecstatic; maybe all the hard work she’d been putting into their marriage was finally going to pay off.
Harry did his best to ignore the couple, though it hurt to see Pansy so happy. He wanted to be the cause of that, not that prat Draco. He remained quiet until Draco left, kissing Pansy on the cheek.
Draco’s heart broke knowing that Harry was purposely ignoring him; Pansy’s heart soared thinking perhaps Draco could really love her; Harry’s heart was crushed seeing Pansy so happy because of another. But they would all continue to live like nothing was wrong and make the best out of what they had.
